Why I Built This

My name is Ryan Benson. I own The Flooring Folks, and I've been installing floors for the last 17 years. Over that time I've installed hundreds of thousands of square feet of flooring โ€” hardwood, tile, laminate, vinyl plank, you name it. I've seen most situations a floor can throw at you.

Over the years I've worked across the country โ€” Wisconsin, Illinois, Arizona, and Alabama โ€” in homes of every size and budget. That range taught me something important: the biggest factor in a successful flooring project isn't the material, the installer, or even the budget.

It's the information the homeowner has before the job starts.

When a homeowner understands what things should cost, what questions to ask, what hidden charges to watch for, and what material makes sense for their room โ€” everything goes better. Better tools, better knowledge, better information means a better floor in your house.

My goal has always been to give more information to the homeowner. To be transparent. To help people get the best value for their money โ€” not the cheapest floor, but the right floor for what they're paying. Calculate Flooring is that mission, scaled up. Every calculator, cost guide, and comparison on this site is free. No signup. No lead-selling. Just the information I'd give you if we were standing in your living room.

Where I've Worked

Different regions mean different climates, different subfloors, different material preferences โ€” and different costs. Working across these states shaped how I think about flooring recommendations.

Wisconsin

Cold climate installs, basements, hardwood in dry winters

Illinois

Urban and suburban homes, mixed material work

Arizona

High heat, tile and stone, concrete subfloors

Alabama

Humidity challenges, The Flooring Folks home base

What I've Installed

Over 17 years, I've worked with virtually every residential flooring material. These aren't categories I read about in a supplier catalog โ€” they're floors I've cut, glued, nailed, grouted, and lived with.

How This Site's Pricing Works

Flooring prices change by material, region, room complexity, subfloor condition, installer availability, and finish level. Because no national calculator can know every local jobsite condition, Calculate Flooring shows ranges instead of pretending a single number is exact.
